Runes (literature)West600 – 1400

Icelandic historian–poet; Prose Edda as the chief medieval literature gate for Norse mythic vocabulary.

Life

Snorri Sturluson (1179–1241) was an Icelandic chieftain, historian and poet. His Prose Edda preserves mythic narratives and poetic diction that later rune and neopagan readers often mine—usually far from Snorri’s own Christian-era scholarly aims. ORDL files him under the runes map node as a literature card for Norse mythic vocabulary, not as a modern rune-magic teacher. This page never gives spell how-to.

The system

  • Mythic narrative and skaldic diction in a Christian Icelandic frame
  • Source for later reception of gods and cosmology
  • ORDL boundary: medieval literature—no modern rune spells

What is lost when the Prose Edda is read only as a spellbook source instead of as medieval poetics?
