Franz Cumont

Franz-Valéry-Marie Cumont · 1868 – 1947

Mithraism (archaeology)WestModern (1900 –)

Belgian historian of religions; pioneer archaeology of Roman Mithras.

Note on controversy

Cumont’s strong Iranian-origin model for Roman Mithras has been heavily revised. Use his collections; check conclusions against post-1970s Mithraic archaeology. ORDL will not reconstruct grades or rituals.

Life

Franz Cumont (1868–1947) mapped the monuments and texts of the Roman cult of Mithras and wider oriental religions in the Empire. Later archaeology revised many of his Iranian-origin theses, but his corpora remain starting points. ORDL lists him as an archaeology–literature card for Mithraism: evidence-first, no reconstructed initiation rites.

The system

  • Corpus of mithraea, tauroctony and inscriptions.
  • Oriental religions in the Roman Empire as a research frame (now debated).
  • ORDL boundary: archaeology and history—not rite revival.

Key works

  • Textes et monuments figurés relatifs aux mystères de Mithra
  • The Mysteries of Mithra (English surveys)
  • Les religions orientales dans le paganisme romain

Where to start

  • Cumont for the monument corpus; then modern Mithraic studies that revise his Iran thesis
  • Museum / site catalogues of mithraea

What can archaeology securely say about Roman Mithras, and what remains unknowable about its rites?
