Note on controversy
Seimei’s life is thinly documented; most vivid stories are medieval and modern fiction. Do not treat anime, games or tourist lore as primary Onmyōdō history.
Life
Abe no Seimei (traditional dates 921–1005) appears in Heian records as an onmyōji and became a magnet for later legends, fiction and shrine devotion. Historical practice of Onmyōdō (calendrics, directional taboos, court ritual) differs from modern pop portrayals. ORDL lists him as a reception-history card for Onmyōdō—not a manual of techniques or a cosplay guide.
The system
- Court onmyōji as calendrical and ritual specialists in Heian memory.
- Legend cycles (fox ancestry, shikigami) as later literature.
- ORDL boundary: folklore and history—no technique instruction.
Key works
- No securely authored treatise corpus; figure known via chronicles and later tales
- Later attributions and popular novels (reception layer)
Where to start
- Academic overviews of Onmyōdō and the Onmyōryō
- Then folklore studies of the Seimei legend cycle
