Note on controversy

Maté's central claim, that early trauma and chronic stress lie behind most addiction, ADHD and much chronic illness, is debated. Researchers agree that adverse childhood experiences raise the risk of many conditions, but they note that the evidence is mostly observational and shows association rather than cause, that ADHD is strongly heritable, and that many people who experience trauma never develop addiction. Supporters credit him with bringing compassion and attention to trauma into addiction care. His books are best read as one influential perspective, not as diagnosis or treatment advice.

Life

Gabor Maté was born to a Jewish family in Budapest; as an infant he survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary, in which his grandparents were killed at Auschwitz. His family emigrated to Canada in 1957. He taught English and literature before studying medicine at the University of British Columbia, then worked as a family doctor and in palliative care in Vancouver. For about twelve years he was staff physician at a clinic in the city's Downtown Eastside, caring for people with severe addiction, which he described in In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts (2008). His books argue that addiction, attention difficulties and much chronic illness are closely linked to early trauma and chronic stress, and he calls for more compassionate care. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2018. This page is not medical advice; see the note on controversy above.

The system

  • Addiction as an attempt to soothe pain: 'not why the addiction, but why the pain'.
  • Chronic stress and suppressed emotion as factors in illness.
  • Trauma understood as what happens inside us, not only the event itself.
  • Compassionate inquiry rather than blame, for patients and for oneself.
