Note on controversy

Nineteenth-century Masonic encyclopedias mix documentation with lodge legend. They are not guides to joining or working degrees. ORDL will not reconstruct passwords, grips or ritual scripts.

Life

Albert G. Mackey (1807–1881) was a Charleston physician who wrote widely on Freemasonry’s history and symbolism, including a Lexicon and an Encyclopedia of Freemasonry. ORDL lists him as a literature and historian-style entry for craft symbolism and the Hiram allegory in print culture. His Victorian scholarship is dated; use it as a map of 19th-century Masonic self-understanding, not as initiation instruction. This page never provides degrees, passwords or how-to.

The system

  • Encyclopedia and lexicon as public symbolic commentary.
  • Hiram Abiff and working tools as moral allegory in print.
  • ORDL boundary: cultural history only—no lodge instruction.

Key works

  • A Lexicon of Freemasonry
  • An Encyclopedia of Freemasonry
  • The Symbolism of Freemasonry

Where to start

  • Mackey’s Symbolism chapters as Victorian reception history
  • Compare with critical academic histories of early Grand Lodge Freemasonry

How does Mackey read the Hiram allegory as moral symbolism rather than literal history?
