Note on controversy

Hall’s synthesis mixes solid references with unverifiable perennial and occult-historical claims (including Atlantis-style narratives). Use it as a topic map; verify details in specialist academic or primary sources.

Life

Manly Palmer Hall (1901–1990) was a Canadian-born writer and lecturer based in Los Angeles. In 1928 he published The Secret Teachings of All Ages, a large illustrated survey of mystery traditions, Hermeticism, Kabbalah, Rosicrucian lore, Freemasonry and comparative symbolism. He later founded the Philosophical Research Society. Hall’s books introduced generations of English readers to esoteric topics; scholars treat them as popular perennial synthesis rather than primary philology, and many historical claims need checking against specialist sources.

The system

  • Perennial survey: one symbolic wisdom underlying many traditions.
  • Encyclopedia style: myths, diagrams and lodge symbolism side by side.
  • Public lectures and the Philosophical Research Society as outreach.

Where to start

  • Use The Secret Teachings of All Ages as a map of topics, then read primary texts (Plato, Hermetica, etc.) and academic histories for each chapter.
  • Compare Hall’s Rosicrucian and Masonic chapters with specialist historians (e.g. on Andreae and early Grand Lodge history).
