Life

Agrippa of Nettesheim was a German scholar, physician and soldier who traveled widely in Europe. His De occulta philosophia libri tres (Three Books of Occult Philosophy), drafted early and printed in full in 1533, arranges natural, celestial and ceremonial magic under a Neoplatonic and Hermetic frame: elemental correspondences, planetary forces, and the role of intellect and religion. He also wrote a skeptical On the Uncertainty and Vanity of the Arts and Sciences. Later ceremonial magic and grimoire culture drew heavily on the Three Books; ORDL presents him as a historical synthesizer, not a practice manual.

The system

  • Three levels: natural, celestial, and ceremonial/intellectual magic.
  • Correspondences of elements, planets and divine names.
  • A Renaissance synthesis of Hermetic, kabbalistic and classical lore.

Key works

  • De occulta philosophia libri tres (Three Books of Occult Philosophy, 1533)
  • De incertitudine et vanitate scientiarum (On the Uncertainty and Vanity of the Sciences)

Where to start

  • Use a modern annotated translation of the Three Books as intellectual history; skip operational chapters if you only want the framework.
