Founder of Shingon in Japan; Major Works (Hakeda) as a standard English literature gate.

Life

Kūkai (774–835), posthumously Kōbō Daishi, established Shingon Buddhism in Japan after study in Tang China. His treatises on mantra, mandala and the realization of Buddhahood in this body circulate in modern translations such as Yoshito Hakeda’s Major Works. ORDL files him as Japanese Buddhist literature. This page does not substitute for abhisheka or temple instruction.

The system

  • Mantra and mandala as published doctrine
  • Buddhahood in this body (sokushin jōbutsu) in Shingon prose
  • ORDL boundary: reading—not empowerment

Key works

  • Major Works (Yoshito S. Hakeda tr./ed.) Amazon
  • Jūjūshinron and related treatises in translation

Como Asociado de Amazon, ORDL gana con las compras que cumplen los requisitos. Los enlaces abren Amazon.com; el precio para ti es el mismo.

Where to start

  • Start with Hakeda’s introductions before technical mandala chapters
  • Pair with temple histories rather than online DIY mikkyō

What does “Buddhahood in this body” mean when it is read as Kūkai’s public argument rather than as a private rite?
