Life

Motoori Norinaga (1730–1801) was a leading Kokugaku (National Learning) scholar whose Kojiki-den commentary shaped modern readings of early kami narratives and Japanese poetics (mono no aware). Later State Shintō politics selectively reused nativist scholarship; ORDL keeps him as a philology–literature card for Shintō history, not as shrine ritual instruction or nationalist ideology.

The system

  • Philology of Kojiki as a path to kami lore.
  • Mono no aware: affective reading of classical poetry and myth.
  • ORDL boundary: literary history—not shrine how-to or State Shintō apology.

Key works

  • Kojiki-den (Commentary on the Kojiki)
  • Essays on mono no aware and classical poetics

Where to start

  • Selections from Kojiki-den in translation with historical notes
  • Modern scholarship distinguishing Kokugaku from later State Shintō

How does Norinaga’s mono no aware reading of myth differ from Confucian moral allegory?
