Note on controversy

Lipton's training in cell biology is real, but scientists say his popular books oversimplify epigenetics. Environmental signals, including stress, do influence gene expression, mostly through well-studied hormonal and signalling pathways; there is no evidence that conscious beliefs can directly reprogram genes or override genetic inheritance, and transgenerational epigenetic inheritance in humans remains weakly supported. Mainstream biologists also reject his picture of the cell membrane as the cell's 'brain' and his use of quantum physics to explain the power of belief, and some critics call these ideas pseudoscience. His emphasis on stress and the mind–body link overlaps with mainstream psychoneuroimmunology; his stronger claims do not. Do not replace medical treatment, or vaccination, on the basis of these books.

Life

Bruce Lipton is an American author and lecturer. He earned a PhD in developmental biology at the University of Virginia, taught anatomy at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine from 1973 to 1982 and then at St. George's University School of Medicine, and did research on cultured stem cells. In the 1980s he came to believe that a cell's response to its environment, not its genes alone, controls its behaviour, and he extended this to the claim that human beliefs and perceptions shape gene activity and health. The Biology of Belief (2005) presented these ideas for a popular audience and became a bestseller; Spontaneous Evolution (2009, with Steve Bhaerman) and The Honeymoon Effect (2013) followed. Since the 1990s he has taught mainly at alternative-medicine and chiropractic institutions and on the lecture circuit. He has also repeated the discredited claim linking vaccines to autism. This page is not medical advice; see the note on controversy above.

The system

  • The environment and the cell's perception of it, not genes alone, regulate cell behaviour.
  • Beliefs and perceptions said to influence gene expression and health (contested).
  • The cell membrane described as the cell's 'brain' (rejected by mainstream cell biology).
  • Love, cooperation and conscious habits as forces for personal and social change.

What does epigenetics actually show, and where do scientists think Bruce Lipton goes beyond it?
