Life

Wándé Abímbọ́lá (b. 1932) is a leading scholar of Yoruba verbal arts and Ifá who has also served as a babaláwo. His publications brought Odù literature into wider academic circulation. ORDL lists him as an Ifá literature mentor: source-critical and respectful. This page does not teach divination procedure, initiation or commerce in rites.

The system

  • Odù as a corpus of verse, ethics and cosmology.
  • Scholar–practitioner voice in postcolonial African studies.
  • ORDL boundary: published literature—no rite sales or how-to.

Key works

  • Ifá: An Exposition of Ifá Literary Corpus
  • Other studies of Yoruba oral literature and Ifá

Where to start

  • Abimbola’s exposition of the literary corpus with a critical preface
  • Pair with anthropological histories of Yoruba religion (non-instructional)

How does treating Odù as literature change the way outsiders read Ifá without turning it into a technique shop?
