Life
Sam Harris is an American author and podcast host. He studied philosophy at Stanford and earned a PhD in neuroscience at UCLA. His first book, The End of Faith (2004), won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award and made him one of the best-known critics of religion of the 'New Atheism' period. Later books argued that science can inform moral values (The Moral Landscape, 2010) and that free will as usually understood is an illusion (Free Will, 2012). Alongside this he spent many years in meditation practice with Buddhist and Hindu teachers; Waking Up (2014) presents meditation as a rational practice, and he later founded the Waking Up meditation app. He hosts the Making Sense podcast.
The system
- Spirituality without religion: contemplative insight separated from dogma.
