Life

Buddhadasa Bhikkhu (1906–1993) was a Thai monk whose Suan Mokkh community and books—such as Heartwood of the Bodhi Tree—retranslated dependent origination, emptiness and everyday practice for modern readers. ORDL files him under Southeast Asian Buddhism as a literature guide. This page does not replace sangha training or vinaya instruction.

The system

  • Modern Thai Theravāda reform prose
  • Dependent origination and voidness in accessible essays
  • ORDL boundary: books—not monastic substitution

Key works

  • Heartwood of the Bodhi Tree
  • Handbook for Mankind (and related Dhamma talks in print)
  • Suan Mokkh publications

Where to start

  • Read with classical Theravāda (e.g. Buddhaghosa) already on ORDL
  • Keep reform rhetoric distinct from forest-tradition biographies

What does Buddhadasa mean by stripping “religion” back to a natural truth of voidness?
