Life

Marie-Louise von Franz was born in Munich and raised in Switzerland. She met C. G. Jung as a student, became one of his closest collaborators, and practiced as an analyst in Zurich for decades. She specialised in the psychological reading of fairy tales and of alchemical symbolism, arguing that both map processes of individuation. She also wrote on number, divination and synchronicity. Major books include The Interpretation of Fairy Tales, Alchemy, and On Divination and Synchronicity. After Jung's death she helped carry analytical psychology into a new generation of readers and trainees.

The system

  • Fairy tales as maps of the collective unconscious and individuation.
  • Alchemy as a symbolic language of psychic transformation.
  • Synchronicity and divination as meaningful coincidence, not causal magic.

Key works

  • The Interpretation of Fairy Tales
  • Alchemy: An Introduction to the Symbolism and the Psychology
  • On Divination and Synchronicity
  • Number and Time

Where to start

  • Start with The Interpretation of Fairy Tales, then Alchemy for the Jung–alchemy link.
