Note on controversy

Swart is a qualified doctor and neuroscientist, but The Source and The Signs go beyond laboratory neuroscience: they recast manifestation, the 'law of attraction', intuition and signs in brain-science terms. Reviewers, including a 2025 review for the Society for Psychical Research, describe this as simplified neuroscience used to package self-help ideas; for example, the brainstem's reticular activating system is presented as a far more decisive 'filter' of meaning than current research supports. Her practical advice on sleep, attention, habits and goal-setting is broadly mainstream; the idea that focused intention shapes outcomes beyond what attention and action explain is not established science.

Life

Tara Swart is a British neuroscientist, medical doctor, author and speaker. She trained in medicine, worked as a psychiatrist and holds a PhD in neuroscience; she later advised business leaders on the brain and performance, and has taught as a senior lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management. She is lead author of Neuroscience for Leadership (2015), written with Kitty Chisholm and Paul Brown. The Source (2019) became an international bestseller by explaining manifestation and the 'law of attraction' in terms of attention, neuroplasticity and goal-setting; The Signs (2025) applies a similar approach to intuition and meaningful coincidences. She also hosts a podcast and speaks widely on sleep, nutrition, stress and wellbeing. This page is not medical advice; see the note on controversy above.

The system

  • Attention as a filter: the brain notices what it has been primed to look for.
  • Neuroplasticity: repeated focus and action reshape habits over time.
  • Visualisation, 'action boards' and clear goals as tools for change.
  • Basics first: sleep, nutrition, hydration, exercise and mindfulness.

Where to start

  • The Source is the book most people know; its chapters on attention and habits stand apart from its manifestation framing.
