Note on controversy

Colonial-era and mid-century ethnography can exoticize or expose communal life. ORDL uses Verger only as a map of what entered public print and archives—not as a license to enter or perform rites.

Life

Pierre Fatumbi Verger (1902–1996) was a French photographer and ethnographer who documented Candomblé houses in Brazil and related Yoruba religious worlds across the Atlantic. His books and archives are major published sources for historians of African-diaspora religions. ORDL lists him as a literature and visual-ethnography card—not as a priest or initiator. This page never sells rites or recommends initiation tourism.

The system

  • Visual ethnography as a published archive of Candomblé and Yoruba Atlantic worlds.
  • Cross-Atlantic comparison without reducing living houses to tourist scripts.
  • ORDL boundary: literature map only—no rite sales or initiation advice.

Key works

  • Dieux d'Afrique / related photo-ethnographic volumes
  • Essays and archive publications on Candomblé and Bahia
  • Photographic corpus held by Fundação Pierre Verger

Where to start

  • Read Verger beside Brazilian and Yoruba historians, not as a standalone “how to”
  • Compare with Cabrera (Santería literature) and Deren (Vodou ethnography) already on ORDL

What changes when Candomblé is approached through published photographs and ethnography rather than through initiation?
