Life
Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala (c. 1535–c. 1616) composed the Nueva Corónica y Buen Gobierno, a long illustrated manuscript addressed to the Spanish king that recounts Andean history, Inca order and colonial abuses. It is a primary published window onto Andean cosmologies and political theology under early colonial pressure. ORDL presents him as a literature card. This page does not sell Andean “shamanic experiences.”
The system
- Indigenous Andean historiography in a colonial epistolary frame
- Illustration as argument about cosmos, kingship and abuse
- ORDL boundary: chronicle literature—no ritual tourism
Key works
- Nueva Corónica y Buen Gobierno (autograph manuscript; modern editions)
- Self-portrait and pictorial programme within the Corónica
Where to start
- Prefer annotated modern editions with Quechua/Spanish apparatus
- Read alongside Inca Garcilaso and critical Andean historiography
